Afford-A-Pro provides roofing in Signal Mountain for homes along the wooded streets of Walden Ridge, from cottages tucked under oaks to houses near the edge of the gorge. We install metal and shingle roofs, fix leaks, replace worn-out roofs and offer free inspections.
Signal Mountain is a Hamilton County town of about 8,877 people on Walden Ridge, high above Chattanooga. Most of its streets wind through thick hardwoods, and at Signal Point the land drops away to a long view over the Tennessee River Gorge.
That setting is lovely to live in and hard on a roof. Tall oaks and poplars shade many houses for most of the day, so shingles stay damp after rain and moss gets a foothold. Every fall, leaves fill gutters and valleys, and a summer thunderstorm can bring a limb down onto the ridge of the house.
Houses near the bluff deal with a different problem: wind that comes up out of the gorge and hits the roof edge first. Winter ice on the ridge adds weight and finds any weak flashing. A good Signal Mountain roof has to handle shade, debris and wind at the same time.
Afford-A-Pro is based in Jasper, in Marion County, and we are licensed and insured to perform roofing work in Tennessee. Every Signal Mountain job begins with a free inspection and a written estimate that spells out the work, with no hidden fees.

Learn More ›Metal suits a wooded lot well. Leaves and needles slide off the smooth panels instead of settling into the surface, and a metal roof dries quickly after rain even when the sun barely reaches it, so moss has a harder time getting started.
We install standing seam panels, with concealed fasteners and raised seams, and ribbed exposed-fastener panels, a sturdy option for a house, a detached garage or a workshop out back. On houses near the open edge of the ridge, we pay close attention to edge trim and ridge caps so the wind has nothing to grab. Compare the two systems on our metal roofing page.
Under heavy shade, small problems grow quietly. A valley packed with wet leaves holds water against the roof, moss lifts the edges of shingles, and a pipe boot that has cracked in the cold lets rain run straight down to the ceiling below.
We follow the water back to the place it actually gets in and repair that spot, then check the rest of the roof for the next weak point. If the roof is near the end of its life, we show you the photos and compare a repair with a replacement in writing. Read more on our roof repair page, or see our work on the far side of the ridge in Powells Crossroads.
Years of shade and trapped moisture can soften the decking under an older roof, and you often cannot tell from the ground. On a replacement we tear the old roofing off down to the deck, walk every sheet, and replace the boards that have gone soft before new underlayment and flashing go down.
Wooded lots take some planning, with materials staged where they will not crush a garden bed and debris lowered away from trees and walkways. A typical house on the mountain is reroofed in one to three days. Permits go through the city or the county, depending on where the house sits, and we file the application and see the required inspections through. Financing options are available, and the details are on our roof replacement page.
If you are buying a house on the mountain, a roof inspection can tell you whether years of shade have done damage you cannot see. It is also worth having after a windstorm or when you notice stains in an upstairs bedroom. Ours is free and covers the roof surface, flashing, vents, gutters and soffits, plus the attic when we can reach it. Every item on the list is spelled out on our roof inspection page.
Spring storms and winter ice bring down limbs all over the ridge. If a branch breaks through your roof, we tarp the opening or make a temporary repair to keep water out, then take photographs and write up an assessment you can send to your insurance company. We answer the same kind of storm calls down in the Sequatchie Valley at Whitwell. Our emergency roofing page explains each step after a storm.
Signal Mountain has offices, shops and community buildings scattered among its neighborhoods, and their roofs face the same leaves and wind as the houses around them. We install metal panel systems, standing seam and TPO for flat or low-slope sections, and we handle complete re-roofs as well as repairs. The systems are described on our commercial roofing page.
We check the roof, gutters and attic, note where shade and debris are causing trouble, and photograph each problem.
You get the price in writing, with repair and replacement options laid out where both make sense.
We go over metal panel styles, shingle grades and colors that look right among the trees and stand up to the wind.
We file the permit with the right office for your address and set a start date once the paperwork is in place.
The crew strips the old roof, repairs the deck, and installs underlayment, flashing and the new roof with the edges fastened tight.
We walk the property together, look over the finished roof and sweep the beds and drive for stray nails.

A leak with one clear source, like a split pipe boot or a gap in the flashing beside a chimney, is usually repaired in a few hours. It takes longer when water has been getting in for a while under heavy tree cover and the decking has softened, because the rotted wood has to be cut out and replaced first. If rain is coming before the full repair, we can tarp the spot or make a temporary repair to keep the house dry.
You can, but it is easy to get wrong. Step only in the flat part of the panel close to where it is fastened, never on the raised seams, and stay off it entirely when it is wet or covered in damp leaves, which on a shaded Walden Ridge street can be most of the fall. A blower from a ladder or a call to a roofer is the safer way to clear it.
Material sets the starting point: architectural shingles generally outlast 3-tab, and a well-installed standing seam or ribbed metal roof can outlast both by decades. Signal Mountain adds its own pressures, with constant shade that keeps shingles damp, leaves that pack into valleys and wind across the top of the ridge. Good ventilation, clean valleys and solid flashing are what let a roof here reach its full life.
Start with the things that drive the number: the size of the roof, how steep it is, how many layers have to come off, how much decking needs replacing, and whether you want shingles or metal. Dormers, valleys and skylights add labor, and so does a lot where materials have to be carried in under big trees. The most reliable way to know is a free inspection and a written estimate, and ours lists every item with no hidden fees.
They can. Shade slows how fast a roof dries after rain, which lets moss and algae take hold on shingles, and falling leaves and needles clog gutters and valleys so water backs up under the edges. Overhanging limbs also scrape the surface in the wind and can drop onto the roof in a storm. Keeping branches trimmed back and gutters clear helps, and metal sheds debris more easily than shingles do.
The same materials work, but the details matter more. Homes on the open edge of the ridge take wind straight off the gorge, so fastening, ridge caps, edge metal and flashing need extra attention to keep panels and shingles from lifting. During the free inspection we look closely at those wind-exposed edges and tell you what we would change.
